Kathy Biery, DDS
Dr. Biery graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and then completed a two-year anesthesia program. Dr. Biery is Board Certified by the American Dental Board of Anesthesia and has been practicing General Dentistry and Anesthesia for over 30 years.
Stephen Paulette, DDS, OMS
Dr. Paulette graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1978 and completed a residency in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery in 1987. He is a specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Paulette has been practicing dentistry for over 30 years and has been a retired Navy Captain since 2009.
Shweta Soni, DDS
Before graduating from Columbia University in 2011, Dr. Soni received her degree in 2005 in Karnataka, India. For the past fifteen years, she has been working to continue her education and to provide high-quality dentistry in our community. In recognition of her work, our great doctor received the title of Leading Physician of the World in Cosmetic Dentistry in 2014.
Dr. Soni’s personal philosophy as a dentist is to provide comprehensive patient treatment, to educate and dispel their dental fears, and to help them smile as they leave our office. When not at work, she spends her time reading, painting, and cooking. She also spends her time with her husband, who works in pediatric oncology and hematology, as well as their household cats.
Frederick L. Canby, DDS, MS
Graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Georgetown University in 1988. He completed his Endodontic specialty training at Northwestern University in 1996. Dr. Canby retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves in September 2019 after 34 years of service.
Dr. Marion Messmer, DDS
Dr. Marion Messmer is a native of Charleston, WV. She became intrigued with dentistry at an early age, proceeding to attend West Virginia University School of Dentistry, Division of Dental Hygiene, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. The four-year program was unique in that it integrated core curriculum with Dental Hygiene coursework and provided training in expanded function dentistry. Dr. Messmer received the award for outstanding clinical competency and professionalism when she graduated from dental hygiene school. This award is given to only one recipient and reflects excellence in clinical skills.

Upon graduation, she moved to Washington, DC, to practice hygiene in general dentistry and periodontal practice settings. Her continued interest in dentistry brought her back to WVU, where she attended dental school and graduated in 1986. She achieved the Operative Dentistry award for top performance from the WVU School of Dentistry, an award again reflecting her accomplished clinical skills in restorative dentistry.
Post graduation, Dr. Messmer practiced as an associate dentist in Washington, DC, and established her own dental practice in Arlington, VA, focusing on family dentistry. In 2007, Dr. Messmer and her family moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where she assisted in organizing the opening of Harrisonburg Rockingham Dental Clinic to serve the surrounding community. She has continued to work in private practice and community health settings. She is a family dentist focusing on restorative and preventative dentistry, maintaining continuing education courses to update and advance her knowledge of the ever-changing world of dentistry.
Dr. Messmer’s husband, Rich, retired from James Madison University’s athletic division, and their son graduated from JMU College of Business, Computer Information Systems, where he met his future wife. We enjoy all the wonderful sites, beauty, and activities of the Valley and consider Harrisonburg our forever home. Dr. Messmer is genuinely grateful for our patients and their trust in allowing Massanutten Dental Team and Oral Surgery to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of their oral healthcare concerns.
